If you want to explore the idea of being a scientist, mathematician or engineer, here are some suggestions on how you should prepare for your success in STEM majors:
Preparing for a College Education in STEM Fields
If you think you might be interested in majoring in a STEM field in college, make sure you are doing what you need to do to insure that you will be successful. Here are some helpful tips:
- Take as many science and math classes as possible. Below is a guide indicating which classes should be taken by grade:
Grade Math Science 9th Geometry Biology 10th Algebra II or Trigonometry Chemistry 11th Math Analysis or Pre-Calculus Physics 12th Calculus Advanced Chemistry or Physics - Take PSAT or ACT early and often as possible. If you take them earlier than your 11th grade year, you will have time to increase your score. Just think of them as practice tests.
- Become involved in pre-college programs, preferably those focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Here are some in the Connecticut and Massachusetts areas:

- Begin the college application process early. Research schools to find which ones will fit you. Talk to alumni and current students to get an idea of the school. It is also best to visit the schools of interest before applying so that you will get a better perspective.
These are only some tips that will help you. It is also important to meet often with your guidance counselors and teachers. Finally, make sure you keep your grades up. If you have trouble with your classes, get help early.
